Most people never get the opportunity to become journalists.
Not because they lack talent, but because they never receive the chance.
Across California, communities are losing local news coverage while aspiring reporters struggle to find meaningful opportunities to learn their craft.
Fieldtalk believes journalism should begin where communities begin.
Every youth tournament, nonprofit event, local business, school competition, and neighborhood story deserves thoughtful, accurate coverage. These moments shape our communities, yet many pass without ever becoming part of the public record.
The Fieldtalk Community Journalism Initiative exists to change that.
We provide aspiring journalists with mentorship, newsroom experience, and opportunities to publish meaningful work while strengthening community journalism across California.
OUR MISSION
Train
Provide hands-on newsroom education in writing, photography, video production, podcasting, ethics, interviewing, editing, and multimedia storytelling.
Mentor
Connect aspiring journalists with experienced editors and working professionals who help develop skills through real assignments.
Publish
Give contributors opportunities to produce original journalism covering the communities traditional media often overlook.
Launch Careers
Help emerging journalists build portfolios, professional references, and practical experience that open doors throughout the media industry.
