On May 9, 2026, Angel City FC entered the night carrying the weight of a three-game losing streak, searching for both a response and rivalry bragging rights against SoCal rivals San Diego Wave FC. Back at home, Angel City came out with urgency, looking to shift momentum and steady their season. With a slightly adjusted lineup, Straus gave Tayler Suarez and Jun Endo attacking roles, hoping to spark something early.
The opening half turned physical almost immediately. Both sides found moments going forward, but neither could find the breakthrough before halftime. Every challenge felt heavier, every transition sharper, as the match slowly settled into the intensity expected from a rivalry matchup.

San Diego came out aggressively after the break and found the opener just minutes into the second half. Capitalizing on a misplaced pass from Emily Sams, Kimmi Ascanio recovered the ball and played it wide to Dudinha. The Brazilian winger drove into the box, cutting through Angel City defenders before her shot deflected off captain Sarah Gorden and into the net for a 1–0 lead.

The goal briefly silenced the crowd, but Angel City responded almost immediately.
Minutes later, Angel City earned a corner where Evenly Shores checked short to recover the second ball before playing it back to Sarah Gorden. Gorden delivered a dangerous ball toward the back post, finding Emily Sams, who calmly finished to level the match at 1–1. The equalizer lifted the energy inside the stadium as Angel City searched for a way back into control.
But San Diego continued finding space in transition, especially through Dudinha, who caused problems throughout the second half.
In the 80th minute, the visitors found the winner. Breaking lines through Angel City’s midfield once again, San Diego worked the ball wide to Dudinha, who delivered a dangerous cross toward the back post. Mimi Van Zanten timed her run perfectly and finished the chance, sealing a 2–1 victory for the Wave.

Angel City showed moments of response, but another close match slipped away late. Now they head back on the road for another difficult test against the Portland Thorns FC at Providence Park, still searching for consistency and a way to stop the slide.
