Angel City turns a fightback into four points—and closes the playoff gap

Angel City FC had to recover a game against Denver. Five days later, they finished one against Seattle.

A 3–3 draw and a 3–1 win at BMO Stadium brought four points from two home matches. By September 18, Angel City sat ninth in the National Women’s Soccer League, one point behind Seattle Reign for the final playoff place, with six matches remaining

The Denver match on September 11 showed how quickly a lead could disappear. Maiara Niehues scored before halftime, only for Yuzuki Yamamoto, Lindsey Heaps, and Janine Sonis to put the visitors 3–1 ahead after the break.

Prisca Chilufya helped change the direction of the night. Introduced in the 62nd minute, she scored a minute later from Sveindís Jónsdóttir’s assist. Ally Sentnor’s penalty in the 74th brought Angel City level. They recovered a point, but the lost lead remained part of the story.

Against Seattle on September 16, Angel City gave themselves more room.

Sentnor converted a 20th-minute penalty following a handball. Ary Borges headed in Evelyn Shores’ delivery in the 40th, sending the home side into halftime two goals ahead. Taylor Suarez added the third in the 81st before Sofia Huerta scored Seattle’s consolation in stoppage time.

The difference between the two nights matters. Against Denver, the substitutes helped repair the damage. Against Seattle, Suarez helped secure the advantage. Angel City found contributions beyond the starting lineup when both matches still had something to decide.

Now that response has to travel. Four consecutive away matches await: Utah on September 20, Washington on September 26, Gotham on October 4, and Denver on October 17. Home fixtures against Bay FC and Boston Legacy close the regular season.

Four points have brought Angel City closer. The next stretch will test whether they can keep collecting them away from BMO.
