California Clásico defeat deepens Galaxy’s 2025 struggles

Carson, CA – May 28, 2025
The LA Galaxy’s 2025 season spiraled further on Wednesday night with a 1-0 defeat to the San Jose Earthquakes in the 103rd edition of the California Clásico. Ousseni Bouda’s 74th-minute goal decided the contest at Dignity Health Sports Park, sending the Galaxy’s winless streak to 16 games (0-12-4) and keeping them rooted to the bottom of the Western Conference.
Despite dominating possession and producing multiple attacking breaks—including several 3v2 and 4v3 opportunities—the Galaxy once again failed to finish. Bouda struck on the counter, sliding a low shot past Novak Micovic to cap off a disciplined San Jose performance.

The Earthquakes, playing without Cristian Arango and Niko Tsakiris, leaned on timely defending and a sharp performance from goalkeeper Earl Edwards Jr., who earned his third clean sheet of the season. The win was San Jose’s third straight, moving them to eighth place in the West with 19 points.
Vanney: “It’s About Execution”
Postgame, LA head coach Greg Vanney pinpointed his team’s inability to capitalize on chances.
“The amount of open 3v2s, 4v3s… the breaks that we had, we squandered over the course of the night,” Vanney said. “This is not about effort. This is about execution.”
Addressing questions about whether misfortune has played a role, Vanney pushed back.
“I’m not a big believer in luck. I’m a believer in doing the work to create those situations,” he added. “We’re not getting many bounces. Things aren’t falling our way, but we have to control what we can—our performances, our effort, our execution.”
Fan Loyalty Holds Strong
Despite their record, Galaxy fans remained in full voice after the match, chanting “We are with you.” The players took time to acknowledge the support, and Vanney offered his thanks.
“The first thing I want to do is thank them,” he said. “The guys feel that support, and it helps them fight. We’re eternally grateful because this is a grind.”

Veteran midfielder Marco Reus continues to lead by example, with 3 goals and 4 assists in 11 matches. However, the Galaxy’s lack of finishing support remains a concern. On the other end, Preston Judd and Bouda kept pressure on LA’s backline, helping San Jose stay firm.
What’s Next?
With Real Salt Lake coming to town on Saturday, the Galaxy have little time to regroup. Still, Vanney remains confident that a breakthrough is coming.
“We are going to get this moving in the right direction,” he said. “It has to be now.”
