Home Away From Home: Club América Takes Over Dignity Health Sports Park

Club América was more than a thousand miles from Mexico City, but one look around Dignity Health Sports Park told a different story.

Yellow shirts filled the stands. Flags waved from every corner. Each América attack drew a roar, every save lifted the crowd, and every decision against the Águilas was met with whistles.

This was a Leagues Cup quarterfinal on American soil, but nothing about the night felt neutral.

The Yellow Takeover

From kickoff, the home of the LA Galaxy belonged to Club América.

Chants rolled through the stadium, overwhelming whatever support Columbus Crew could muster. Every touch from an América player carried energy from the stands, and the noise only grew as the night unfolded.

It felt less like América had traveled to Southern California and more like the club had brought home with it.

Cota Changes the Game

Columbus controlled more of the possession and created enough opportunities to change the match, but Rodolfo Cota refused to let that happen.

His defining moment arrived in the 39th minute. After a VAR review confirmed an América handball inside the box, Brais Méndez stepped forward with a chance to equalize.

Cota read it perfectly.

The América goalkeeper dove to his left and stopped the penalty, preserving the lead and igniting another eruption from the yellow-filled stands. He finished the opening half with six saves, including another important stop to deny Josef Martínez just before the break. MLS match recap

Two Goals, and the Volume Rises

América struck first in the 11th minute.

Brian Rodríguez led a quick transition before finding Raphael Veiga, who curled a left-footed shot from outside the box off the far post and into the net.

The stadium erupted.

Columbus continued pushing, but every path back into the match seemed to end with Cota. Then, six minutes into first-half stoppage time, América delivered another blow.

What had already felt like a home match had become a celebration.

 Columbus continued searching for a way back, but América protected its advantage.

Columbus Couldn’t Find a Way Back

The Crew returned from halftime needing a response. They finished the match with 58 percent possession, 18 shots and 10 corners, but none of it produced the goal they needed.

América protected its advantage, attacked through quick transitions and leaned on Cota whenever Columbus threatened. Behind them, the crowd never allowed the intensity to fade.

Every América clearance brought cheers. Every Columbus miss brought relief. The field was in Carson, but the emotional advantage belonged entirely to the Águilas.

Home, Wherever They Go

The second half passed without another goal, sealing América’s 2–0 victory and its first appearance in the Leagues Cup semifinals.

The result also completed a historic all-Liga MX semifinal field for the first time in tournament history. América will face Monterrey for a place in the final. Leagues Cup

But the lasting image from Carson was bigger than the score.

It was a stadium covered in yellow. A goalkeeper feeding off every roar. A team playing more than a thousand miles from Mexico City without ever appearing to be away.

For one night, Dignity Health Sports Park became Club América’s home.
